Designing Buildings in running for a Be2Award

designingbuildingswiki-logoIt has been a busy few weeks for Designing Buildings, the free construction-specific “expert wiki” which celebrated its first anniversary at the end of June.

Earlier this month, the website announced new functionality which made it easier for people to create their user profile pages and to keep track of all their contributions to Designing Buildings. Users can also track articles, and email other users. These types of functionality are also available on Wikipedia, but the DB team has customised their platform, which uses the same core software, to make it more intuitive to use. A large orange “Create an article” button has also been added to the header, and Gregor Harvie has also provided a YouTube video to help people make a start.

Designing Buildings now has over 800 articles, and – as I’ve previously written – some of these have achieved impressive Google search engine results, making it a potentially powerful content marketing platform for those looking to share their expertise and authority through their contributions.

2013 Be2Awards

Designing Buildings has also been nominated in two categories for the third running of the Be2Awards (see previous post), for which online voting is now open (the online polls close at midnight on Monday 23 September). It is listed in the Best AEC community, network or application section and the Best education/learning or charity project section.

Also up for an award is NBS – which, by coincidence, I see is the subject of an article posted on Designing Buildings just this morning!

Announcements of the Be2Awards will take place at London’s Building Centre next Wednesday, 25 September (it’s part of London Social Media week event), with the presentations interspersed among the Be2Talks, a TEDx-style conference featuring speakers on technology, social media and the built environment. Perhaps reflecting the explosion of industry interest in building information modelling, this year’s event will have a strong BIM strand, but the speakers are under strict instructions not to talk too technical! (Register here – just £15)

[Disclosure: Not only is Designing Buildings a client, but I also co-organise the Be2Awards event.]
